Timing belt vs chain — when do I actually replace it?
Buying a 2012–2016 car. Seller says “timing is fine.” How do you verify belt vs chain, and what’s a safe km/age rule before you walk?

Look up the exact engine: belt vs chain. Belt engines: often 100–160k km or 7–10 years, whichever first — include water pump if it’s driven by the belt. No receipt = budget the job or walk. Chain engines: listen for cold rattle; not “lifetime” if neglected oil changes.

Seller said “fine.” No invoice. I priced the belt job into the offer or walked. Don’t gamble interference engines.
